CYCLISTS’ LEGAL & SAFETY REQUIREMENTS

All road users should drive or ride safely and obey the traffic rules at all times. Cyclists infringing the law can be fined. Cyclists are required to provide their own bicycle, equipped with a functional bell (traffic regulations requirement). They must also wear a securely fitted and Australian Standards approved bike helmet. The penalty for breach of either of these requirements is a fine of $185.

On shared pathways, keep left unless overtaking, overtake on the right, ring your bell and call ‘passing’. Wheeled traffic gives way to foot traffic and you must move off the path when stopped. Cyclists are advised to wear riding gloves or fingerless mitts to protect your hands in case of a fall. Wind vests and rain jackets should be of an appropriate highly visible colour.

Cyclists are advised to undertake a reasonable level of training in the months preceding the Ride to enable them to be in a position to maintain an average speed of 20-25 km per hour over the course of the Ride.
